Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Strategic Authority?

A Strategic Authority is a new regional body that brings together big decisions affecting the whole area — things like transport networks, housing growth, skills, and climate planning. It works alongside councils, which will still run day-to-day services like schools, social care, and waste collection.

What powers will the Mayor have?

The Mayor will have strategic powers over transport, skills, housing and regeneration, the environment, and investment. These powers are about setting the overall direction for the region. Your council will continue to deliver the services you use every day. 👉 Learn more: Powers

When will the Mayor be elected?

The first election will be on 7th May 2026, after councils have been reorganised into new unitary councils. You’ll be able to vote directly for the Mayor, just as you do for councillors and MPs. 👉 See: Timeline

How will the Mayor be held to account?

The Mayor will be regularly scrutinised by councillors from across the area. They must publish an annual report, and residents can attend meetings and submit questions.

Will this replace my council?

No. Councils will still run local services. The Mayor and Strategic Authority focus on cross-boundary issues that are better handled at a regional level.

How can I get involved?

You can take part in consultations, vote in the Mayoral election, attend public meetings, submit questions, and follow published reports online.
